The National Organization
In May 1997, Jolene Ivey and Karla Chutz began publishing a newsletter called "Mocha Moms" in the hopes of connecting with other mothers of color across the country that were taking time off from their careers to raise their children. The newsletter was intended to encourage these mothers to feel good about their choice and to provide information to enrich their parenting experience. By June of 1997, Jolene and Karla teamed up with Cheli English-Figaro to make Mocha Moms a national support organization.

The first Mocha Moms newsletter was published in the spring of 1997 and was distributed to over 100 mothers nationwide.

The first chapter was established in Prince George's County, Maryland. Joby Dupree came on board as the fourth founder in the fall of 1997 and Mocha Moms, Inc. was born.

Mocha Moms, Inc. was incorporated in 1999 and received 501 (c)(3) non-profit status in January 2002.

Origins of Mocha Moms Newark

dancinggourds.jpg

The Newark Chapter was founded in 2001 by Kelly G., a transplanted Ohio native who arrived in Delaware with a new home, a growing family and needing the support, fellowship and shared experiences that being a Mocha Mom offered.

She activated our chapter in 2001 with the help of 7 other charter members, and the support and guidance of members of the Burlington County NJ Chapter of Mocha Moms.

We are now celebrating the start of our 4th year, and we are going strong with 30+ active members.

Our members come from all walks of life, and bless our membership with a variety of talents and expertise. They enjoy the comfort and fellowship of sharing time with women in similar seasons of motherhood through bi-monthly support meetings, moms' only activities, playgroups, field trips, community service projects and couples activities.
